The journey for Aimee Everett has been nothing short of remarkable, evolving from a young hopeful to the captain of Crystal Palace Women’s team.

In an exclusive interview, Everett talks about her experiences, challenges, and the ambitions that drive her and the team in their maiden WSL season.

Rising Through the Ranks

The past year has been a significant chapter in Aimee Everett’s football career. She lifted the Women’s Championship title with Crystal Palace in April, marking her second triumph in the league, having previously won it with Leicester in the 2020/21 season.

At 23, leading Crystal Palace into their first WSL campaign is no small feat. She is now one of only two captains under the age of 30 in the Barclays WSL, the other being Manchester United’s Maya Le Tissier. The season opener, though challenging, was a testament to the team’s fortitude and growth.

Facing New Challenges

Opening their WSL journey with a 4-0 defeat to Tottenham was tough for the Eagles. Reflecting on the match, Everett said, “Coming away with a loss is not what we wanted. Every game is going to be a test. I was proud of the girls for competing at this top level.”

The transition from the Championship to the WSL is monumental. Coach Laura Kaminski emphasized post-match the importance of taking it week by week and improving continuously. Everett echoed this sentiment, recognizing the different pace and challenges the WSL brings.

A Diverse Background

Before football took center stage, Everett had a different path laid out. Initially, while at Liverpool in the U23s, she juggled multiple commitments.

Her background is unique, having done an electrical apprenticeship, a stark contrast to many of her peers drawn to more traditional roles like hair and beauty. Her weeks were a grueling cycle of work, college, and football training.

Positional Evolution

Everett’s versatility on the pitch is noteworthy. Initially a No. 9, she has transitioned through various roles.

“I actually was a No 9 growing up,” she shared. “But playing as a center-back suits me better now. I feel very comfortable in that position, and I’m still learning and developing.”

She has embraced her role, continuously observing and learning from other center-halves in the league. Her adaptability is a key strength, allowing her to thrive in her new position.

Leadership and Team Dynamics

As captain, Everett leads with a style unique to her. She remarked, “A lot of captains lead in different ways. I wouldn’t say I’m the loudest. I lead by example.”

She acknowledges the collective leadership within the team. “It’s not just me. We’ve got a lot of leaders that don’t wear the armband but put in the work week after week.”

Future Ambitions: Eyes on the Lionesses

Playing outside the top flight has kept Everett off the radar for the national team, but she remains hopeful. “If that wasn’t my aim, what’s the point in playing football? You want to reach the best level you can.”

Having represented England up to U19, she understands the dedication required. “It’s a difficult task, but it’s something I aim for. I’d be stupid not to.”

Underdogs with Nothing to Lose

Crystal Palace are clear underdogs in the WSL, a title Everett embraces. “It’s no secret we are the newcomers. It’s going to be a difficult year.”

She views the lack of pressure as a positive. “Being the underdogs can work in our favor. We can go into games confident, with nothing to lose, and just give it our best shot.”

Everett’s journey is an inspiring reminder of resilience and adaptability in sports. Leading Crystal Palace in the WSL, she embodies the spirit of determination.

As the Eagles navigate their first season, they do so with a grounded captain at the helm, facing each challenge head-on with nothing to lose.
