Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker dives deep into his motivations and aspirations in a recent interview. He shares personal anecdotes and insights into his professional journey.
Under new management, Alisson remains optimistic about both his and Liverpool’s future, believing the best is yet to come.
A Goalkeeping Legacy
Alisson Becker’s family boasts a rich goalkeeping tradition. His mother, Magali, was a handball goalkeeper, and his late father also played in goal. Additionally, his great-grandfather and older brother Muriel were also goalkeepers.
Despite his brother’s initial advice against it, Alisson was drawn to the position. “I enjoyed watching him [Muriel] between the posts, diving and making saves. I chose the position as well and love to be a goalkeeper,” he shared.
Inspirations and Role Models
At Internacional, Alisson found inspiration in his brother Muriel, whom he calls his “biggest inspiration as a keeper, a man, human being, father and husband.”
Alisson’s idols include goalkeeping legends like Brazil’s Claudio Taffarel, Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon, and Germany’s Manuel Neuer. Taffarel, who has been a coach at Liverpool since 2021, shares a special bond with Alisson.
Motivations Beyond Trophies
Alisson made his way from Internacional to Roma and eventually to Liverpool in 2018, achieving significant honors along the way.
Despite his numerous trophies, Alisson finds motivation in his faith and work ethic. “My main motivation is not the prizes, the trophies – my motivations come from inside,” he revealed.
He attributes his success to his faith in God, saying it drives him to work hard and strive for excellence in everything he does. Alisson has made 268 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, with 205 in the Premier League.
Performance and Techniques
Alisson’s stellar performance statistics speak volumes. Since his Premier League debut on August 12, 2018, he has prevented more goals than any other keeper, according to Opta’s figures.
He has also kept 89 Premier League clean sheets, second only to Manchester City’s Ederson. Alisson emphasizes hard work, good positioning, and the ability to read the game as keys to his success.
“I try to stay focused and look at the ball. This makes me move the way I move and play the way I play. Here at Liverpool, I improved my one-to-one situations because of the way I train. The best is still to come,” Alisson stated confidently.
New Era Under Arne Slot
Arne Slot took over as Liverpool manager in the summer, replacing Jurgen Klopp. Alisson and his teammates have embraced the new manager’s vision and methods.
Slot’s regime includes his keepers training more with outfield players. This is aimed at improving the team’s build-up play from the back.
“We were great before, but Arne is bringing to us a new energy and knowledge,” says Alisson. “We are committed to the plan and can see it is a good plan. We still have a lot to improve but we are in the right direction.”
Commitment to Liverpool
Liverpool’s promising start under Slot saw six wins in the first seven matches. Alisson is eager to continue contributing to this success.
Alisson turned down a move to Saudi Arabia to stay with Liverpool, citing his commitment to the club and his role in the leadership group.
“We have a lot of young players, new players coming in, a completely new staff. The challenge for us was to keep the good things, share them with the new staff, and embrace the good stuff they bring,” Alisson explained.
Optimism for the Future
Alisson remains optimistic about both his and Liverpool’s futures. He believes they are on the right track and that the best is yet to come.
Alisson Becker’s journey is one of legacy, motivation, and unyielding faith. He continues to draw inspiration from his past while looking forward to a bright future.
